Zarathud is a small town nestled in the roofed forests near Malaclypse and Portsmouth. It was initially built in two small treeless plains in the forest. The town is located in Portsmouth District, Malaclypse Province.
It is a town themed after 1950's ideas of futuristic buildings (cubic style).
History
Zarathud was built YOLD 3130 as an escape for middle class people from the blight of Portsmouth and big city feel of Malaclypse. It was envisioned as a small town, due to a desire to preserve the surrounding forest, and remains so to this day. It was named for the Discordian saint Zarathud the Incorrigible.
Later, the town built a small path through the forest to a set of plains adjacent to Cascadia Lake and was instrumental in building the Portsmouth Bypass to allow travellers to bypass the poor people of Portsmouth.
In YOLD 3182, the town annexed a nearby small swampy island, in order to lobby for the construction of the provincial courthouse (which has yet to be built). They named this place Columbia Island, after the real life Washington, D.C., which was also built on a swamp.
The MalaZar tunnel, a small waterway between Cascadia Lake and the Malaclypse River, was constructed by the residents in YOLD 3182, to enable more efficient aquatic transportation.
Neighbourhoods
Zarathud is home to three distinct neighbourhoods, though each neighbourhood is very small (only a few buildings).
Main town
The main town, as it is called by residents, is where most of the residents live. The town post office, inquisitor, constabulary, marijuana dispensary, and rail station are located here. The pub for the town is likely to be located here.
Docklands
The Docklands were annexed some time in YOLD 3175 to enable trade with nearby Cascadia via Cascadia Lake, which was otherwise a difficult journey prior to the construction of Erisiana Route 10.
Columbia Island
A recent annex to Zarathud, Columbia Island was annexed in YOLD 3182 to allow for construction of the provincial courthouse. It is a rather small and swampy island.
Transportation
The town is served by Erisiana Route 10 and Erisiana Route 10B (Portsmouth Bypass).
